M'sian cops detain 'hamper gang'

Four men, believed to be members of the 'Hamper Gang' which robs unsuspecting victims on the pretext of delivering hampers, have been detained by the police.

They were picked up at several locations in Kota Kinabalu on Friday.

CID chief SAC Omar Mammah said on Monday that the first suspect was nabbed when he jumped from the second floor of a double-storey house in Taman Sagindai, Kinarut to evade a police raid about 5.50am.

In the incident, the man sustained a broken hand, leg and hips.

Two more suspects were also picked up in Kinarut while the fourth was apprehended about 16 hours later in Kampung Pabilan, Keningau.

Initial investigations revealed that the four were part of a gang which struck at the home of a civil servant in Austral Park, Kepayan near Kota Kinabalu on March 31.

Omar said, in the 11am incident, the gang took away RM30,000 in valuables after hoodwinking the maid into believing they were delivering hampers for the civil servant who was away at the time.

Earlier, when confronting the maid, the intruders had whipped out a knife and a machete from the hampers.

Omar said the police were in the midst of tracking down the gang's eight accomplices to assist in 11 robberies in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Keningau.
